Hear the Word of the Lord

"Hear the word of the LORD, O sons of Israel,For the LORD has a case against the inhabitants of the land, Because there is no faithfulness or kindness Or knowledge of God in the land.” – Hosea 4:1
God begins this section of Hosea with a command, not an explanation: “Hear the word of the LORD.”
This is not merely an invitation to listen – it is a covenant summons. God is calling His people to attention because something essential has been lost. The LORD declares that He has a case against the inhabitants of the land. In other words, this is a serious confrontation rooted in a broken relationship, not a casual rebuke.
God identifies the core issue plainly: “There is no faithfulness or kindness or knowledge of God in the land.” These three belong together. When the knowledge of God fades, faithfulness erodes. When people stop listening to God’s Word, steadfast love disappears. What Israel was experiencing outwardly was the result of something missing inwardly.
One of the most troubling realities in Hosea’s day was not that God had stopped speaking – it was that His people had stopped listening. They no longer welcomed correction. They resisted instruction. God’s Word was no longer shaping their thinking or directing their lives.
This passage confronts us with an uncomfortable truth: spiritual decline does not always look like rebellion. Sometimes it looks like familiarity without attentiveness. We may still hear Scripture read, attend worship, and use spiritual language, yet fail to truly hear the Word of the LORD.
Devotion begins not with activity, but with attentiveness. Before God’s Word can instruct us, it must address us. Before it can shape our lives, it must be received with humility. God calls His people to hear Him again – not selectively, not defensively, but honestly and reverently.
The question Hosea presses upon us is simple but searching: Are we truly hearing God, or merely hearing about Him?
Prayer for Reflection
Lord, You are still speaking, and I want to hear You. Forgive me for the times I have allowed familiarity to dull my attentiveness to Your Word. Restore in me a listening heart – one that receives truth with humility and responds with obedience. Teach me to hear You again and to walk faithfully in Your ways. Amen.
