My Ways Are Higher

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there without watering the earth and making it bear and sprout, and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; so will My word be which goes forth from my mouth; It will not return to me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:8-11

One of the greatest obstacles to truly knowing God is not indifference, but overconfidence. We often assume that we can approach God according to our own understanding – our preferences, experiences, or expectations. But God reminds us plainly that His ways do not originate with us.

Through Isaiah, the LORD corrects our assumptions: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways.” This is not God pushing us away; it is God calling us higher. His wisdom exceeds ours. His purposes stretch beyond our limited vision. And His ways are always right – even when they are difficult to understand.

Yet this passage does more than humble us. It reassures us. God immediately connects the greatness of His thoughts to the faithfulness of His Word. Just as rain and snow never fail to accomplish their purpose, God’s Word never returns empty. It always produces what God intends – sometimes visibly and quickly, sometimes quietly and over time.

Israel’s failure was not that God’s Word lacked power. It was that they stopped trusting it. They leaned on their own understanding and neglected the truth God had already spoken. But God reminds His people that His Word is reliable precisely because it comes from Him.

This is why daily engagement with Scripture matters. We are not simply reading ancient words; we are submitting ourselves to divine wisdom that reshapes our thinking. God’s Word works because God is faithful – not because we approach it perfectly.

When we return to Scripture with humility, we place our confidence not in our insight, but in God’s promise. His Word accomplishes what He desires. Our role is to receive it, trust it, and live in light of it.

Prayer

Lord, Your ways are higher than mine, and Your wisdom surpasses my understanding. Forgive me for the times I have trusted my own thoughts more than Your Word. Teach me to submit my thinking to Your truth and to trust that You always accomplish Your purposes through what You have spoken. Help me to walk humbly in Your ways. Amen.
