In 1906, Reginald Fessenden revolutionized communication by broadcasting the first AM radio message. On Christmas Eve, he read Luke’s account of Jesus’ birth, sending the words of the Christmas story across the waves. Imagine a ship captain, accustomed to the taps of Morse code, suddenly hearing a voice proclaiming the greatest story ever told. In the stillness of the night, “A Savior has been born to you. Who is Christ the Lord" echoed across the seas – marking history forever.
These twelve words encapsulate the heart of Christmas and the foundation of Christian faith. They reveal three profound truths about God’s message to humanity:
1. God’s Good News for All People
The angel’s proclamation in Luke 2:10 –"Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people" – broke a 400-year silence from God. This was no ordinary announcement; it was the arrival of salvation, a message of hope transcending race, culture, or status.
The Gospel is “good news of great joy” because it offers salvation to everyone – regardless of background or sin. As Paul writes in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.”
2. The Salvation of Sinners
Luke 2:11 declares, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior.” The title “Savior” speaks to humanity’s need for deliverance from sin. The announcement was made to shepherds – lowly and often marginalized in society – demonstrating God’s grace to the humble.
As Charles Spurgeon noted, “Christ was not sent to mend our errors, cure our vices, or refine our spirits. He came to save us from our sins.” The humility of the shepherds contrasts starkly with the pride of rulers like Herod, reminding us that salvation is for those who recognize their need for it.
3. Victory Over Evil
The angel continues, “A Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” The term “Christ” identifies Jesus as the anointed one, uniquely empowered to defeat sin, death, and evil. As Lord, He reigns sovereign, fulfilling God’s promises and ushering in ultimate victory.
This Christmas, the twelve words –"A Savior has been born to you. Who is Christ the Lord." – invite us to reflect on the life-changing power of God’s good news, the salvation of sinners, and Christ’s victory over darkness.
May their message echo in our hearts and across the seas of our lives, just as they did in Fessenden’s historic broadcast.
Until next time, Merry Christmas!
