You Have Forgotten the Law of Your God

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being My priest. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children.” (4:6) “So the people without understanding are ruined.” (4:14c) Hosea 4:6; 4:14c

God now reveals how His people arrived at such a dangerous place. They did not lose His Word. They did not lack access to it. God says plainly, “You have forgotten the law of your God.”

In Scripture, forgetting is not a failure of memory – it is a failure of priority. To forget God’s law means to stop living with it at the center of life. Israel had been given what no other nation possessed: God’s revealed thoughts, His covenant promises, and His wisdom for daily living. Through His law, God taught them how to worship, how to live justly, and how to walk in His blessing.

Yet over time, Israel treated this gift lightly. They exchanged God’s wisdom for the wisdom of the surrounding nations. What once shaped their identity became optional. God’s truth moved from essential to inconvenient.

The result was devastating. Scripture says, “The people without understanding are ruined.” When God’s Word no longer informs decisions, confusion replaces clarity. When truth is neglected, discernment fades. And when understanding is lost, ruin is not far behind.

This passage reminds us that spiritual decline rarely begins with dramatic rebellion. It begins quietly, when fundamentals are neglected. When Scripture is no longer read attentively, remembered intentionally, or applied faithfully, the soul slowly drifts. Over time, forgetting God’s Word leads to forgetting God Himself.

God’s warning is not meant to drive us away – it is meant to call us back. He speaks so clearly because He knows that life, stability, and blessing flow from remembering what He has revealed. To forget God’s law is to disconnect from the very source of understanding He graciously provides.

Knowing God requires more than access to Scripture. It requires keeping God’s Word before us – regularly, reverently, and intentionally.

Closing Prayer

Father, You have given me Your Word as a gift, not a burden. Forgive me for the times I have allowed it to drift from the center of my life. Restore my hunger for Your truth and teach me to remember Your ways daily. I want Your Word to shape my thinking, guide my steps, and guard my heart. Amen.
