The body of Christ is a diverse entity with people from every corner of the globe. Yet our Lord prayed that we would be one, just as He and the Father are one.
In the book of Acts, particularly in Acts chapter 2, the account of the disciples in the upper room presents the idea that the Holy Spirit operates powerfully through a group of unified believers. That unity includes having the same revelation about Jesus and the same desire to see him glorified.
The exciting part about this is that the body of Christ when unified, can become the most passionate, purposeful, and powerful force on Earth. If its leaders foster unity and the Holy Spirit moves, nothing can stop the irresistible influence of the church of Jesus Christ. Oh Lord, let us see this mighty church in our generation!
Additionally, there is a diversity of gifts in the body of Christ. Each one is given a gift for the
edification of the rest (1 Corinthians 12:7). Only when God’s people are taught and released to use their gifts can the body be strong enough to carry out the gospel mandate.
Author Richard Lovelace suggests “there are enough gifted people in the body of Christ to influence the world.”
One of the primary ways we can accomplish this unity and effectiveness is suggested in the following argument from Lovelace.
“But this will only occur if Christians rise up out of the almost total passivity toward shaping our culture which they have adopted throughout most of the century and make their values and desires known.” – Richard Lovelace
If we unify under the banner of Christ and employ our gifts in the power of the Spirit, the church can and will advance the kingdom of God in our generation! The church is called to
be unified and unstoppable.
Until next time …stay strong in the Lord!
